Car shopping

So it seems that I am in need of a motorized vehicle by April. Unfortunately, guys, I have never been car shopping. Like, ever. I have no idea what is a good brand, what constitutes a car in good condition, what to look for, what is a good amount of miles or price, etc. All I know is that I want a smallish, four-door something that won't fall

If you're looking for something that really safe in the snow (and I'm assuming being from the South you do know about switching gears while going down hills or in lieu of brakes during storms riiiiight? :-P )Subaru's are great with their all-wheel drive and their one of the safest crash tested cars out there. But if you're not worried about snow their no more fuel efficient than your average car, just safer.

You need a Subaru. Just so you can say things like "I'm going out with Subaru now, kthnxbai" and "Subaru gives the smoothest rides."

I know nothing about cars :/
