Why does it need to retain its character? I've heard a lot about the "stop Camden redevelopment" thing, but... no one's actually given any good reasons why? Yes, they may be part of history, but so? Nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia seems a bit pointless to me!
Yes, I may be playing devil's advocate here, but no one's actually said WHY it's important that these places remain, just OMG IT IS. I want answers, dammit!
Because mate, seriously, where else are we gonna go? If they bulldoze the freaking Ballroom, then my options on a Friday night are down to Rock at Meanfiddler, where you're not allowed to mosh. I understand your disapproval of blind bandwagon jumping but Camden is our place, the place we go to not stand out, to not be stared at and to not have random people confronting you about the way you dress (I have had this in other parts of London). Camden has got commercial enough, and the tube station doesn't need to be any bigger than it is. We need to keep the ballroom alive cause it's part of our history, rock and roll history, ya know?
I think its to do with a rejection in what comes in its place.
We're not talking about an evolution into a new and interestingly diverse culture same but different to what we had before.
We're talking about a move to an increasingly monotonous Commercialised and Americanised culture and landscape. It's about slowly stripping away the individual character of places to have the same mass appeal modernised character everywhere, and I prefer a little more diversity than that :o)
do you know how many people signed the petition to keep the intrepid fox open? THOUSANDS...
Camden is grimy, but i love it, ive signed petitions and been on marches, it will get you absolutely nowhere.
If you really want to get somewhere either raise some billions of money, or claim that camden is a religious home to what SATANISTS and Reprubates?? Try the your not being P.C angle. PETITION TO GET A MOSQUE opened.
Yellow Ken, doesnt give a shit about rock and roll, sex and drugs, come up with a better plan. Or even better vote in the next london election, or even better than that the next general election.
The people that own the ballroom don't give a shit about rock and roll either, they will make a fortune.
