I realize this is a rather late reply, but I don't check LJ all that much anyway, so...
But yeah, I can empathize with you, in that whole loaded yes/no question situation. It's not like they asked something easier, like, "Do you believe in God?" and you said "What do you mean?" or anything like that. It's a catch-22; you don't want to be guilty of denial, but at the same time, you also don't want to be instantly categorized/stereotyped before someone gets a chance to know you on a personal level.
