[Background] Ryoji doesn't know it himself...but he is not human. Not by birth. He is, essentially, a child of Nyx--a primal entity considered to be the mother of all Shadows, creatures that lie at the seat of every human being's soul. In this capacity he is the "Appriser" of Nyx--the one who will summon her forth to trigger the end of the world. He was not supposed to have manifested at all, but the Japanese Kirijo Group's secret experiments in the city of Iwatodai resulted in his materialization into the human world. However, due to the interference of one of the researchers, his body was fragmented into thirteen separate pieces. He was still immeasurably strong, however, and when an Anti-Shadow robot named Aigis confronted him, he was able to withstand her attacks. But he was weak enough for her to seal his presence within an innocent seven-year-old boy who happened to be nearby. This was Minato Arisato, and Ryoji, or Thanatos as he was known at the time, would remain within him for ten more years.
The manifestation of Thanatos in the human world caused an extra hour to appear between 12 and 12:01 a.m., referred to as the Dark Hour. In this twisted reality, the moon turned a sickly green, water turned red, all electronic devices stopped working, the site of the experiments (now the local high school) twisted into a towering labyrinth, and all the people in the world became encased in coffins, sleeping. All except for a few. For these people, the Dark Hour was dangerous. Shadows roamed freely in this realm and should they catch an unsuspecting human, they would destroy the person's mind entirely, leaving them listless, slowly wasting away as they lost all interest in the world around them. This strange phenomenon became known as Apathy Syndrome. Not all humans were vulnerable, though. For some, they were capable of summoning their own Shadows to assist them rather than attack them. These helpful aspects of their personalities were called Personas.
By a trick of fate, Minato returned to Iwatodai as a transfer student. Once there, he experienced the Dark Hour for the first time and met a manifestation of Thanatos that called himself Pharos--a phantom child aspect that still retained some power and memory of who and what he was. He had Minato sign a contract that allows the human boy access to the Velvet Room, and when a large Shadow attacks the dormitory on the next full moon, he urges Minato to go ahead and use the gun-like Evoker that allows the summoning of a Persona. Thus, the seal on Thanatos is broken.
The more large shadows that Minato conquers, the more that Thanatos becomes whole again. The experiments in the Kirijo laboratory were designed to summon Nyx, and that's exactly what the protagonists have been doing unwillingly. By the time they discover this, Thanatos has already manifested in a flesh and blood human body--Ryoji. He has been granted a false background and false memories that completely check out...after all, he was admitted to the high school as a transfer student himself.
The memories of meeting Minato as Pharos seem to have been lost with gaining humanity...but he is still able to experience the Dark Hour himself. He alone is safe from the Shadows who hunt at this time, and while he still becomes ill when he stays out too long within it, he is quickly becoming accustomed to it and adapting, albeit far more easily than a normal human should.
He has befriended Minato's group quickly, even accompanying them on a class trip to a hot springs resort, where the urge to stay in the spring long enough to see the girls bathing was too much of a temptation to resist. This led to Junpei, Minato, and Akihiko having to avoid the detection (and wrath) of the girls. But along with Junpei, he ended up fainting from staying in the hot water too long. It was far better than enduring an "execution" at Mitsuru's hands, though. A scalding is better than being caught by the school's best fencer--especially when she can be a terrible tyrant queen of student council beatdown when provoked.
So after the long trip home, Ryoji decided to rest early that night...
Too bad for Nyx that the forces in Somarium have decided to borrow her Appriser for a while.
[Personality] At face value, Ryoji comes off as your average high school flirt who can't get a date no matter how he tries. And how he tries...If it's breathing and has boobs, he'll hit on it. Not the most effective of methods. Especially since it sometimes leads to a stomped foot. He's also something of a pervert--he's not opposed to lingering at hot springs into the "girls only" hours. Accidentally, of course. But no matter what happens, he retains his carefree attitude and rebounds after every setback, ready to give things another go at success. He considers his friends to be like family (seeing as how his parents are really never around) and he's extremely loyal to them. Even though his memory of his own life is spotty at best, he's always having fun making new memories to cherish.
[Specialties/Abilities] Ryoji still has the ability to take on his true form as Thanatos, the embodiment of Death itself: a monster with no face, and a mask that resembled a cross between an animal skull and a knight's helmet, and a mantle of coffins around its neck and shoulders. He will likely retain much of his combat strength in this form, but his ability to kill others with a single blow will be sealed. Just in case. ._. Not that he'll even know that he has this power...
[Affection] Expect to be hit on if you're a girl. XD He'll flirt, but he's not the type to grope. He has no problem with peeping, though. He'll accept hugs and kisses with great relish, though~ If you're a dude, tough luck. :| You'll have to make do with just being a friend.
