I hate it when people romanticize poverty.

People like to say things like money can't buy happiness, or make memes about how having a rich life doesn't require being rich, or they yearn for simpler times before...I don't know what. It just pisses me off ( Read more... )

<3 well put.

I had a similar thought a few months ago about wartimes, and how we romanticize WW2 era for the good and strength and hope and etc. people used to get through it, but it was flipping horror to live in it. In light of things today, I'm sure no one feels that way. But I daresay we likely romanticize a lot of things we shouldn't. And I say we but I mean people in general. And I hate when I see that too, whether it's poverty, or illness (yes people do that), or wartimes.

Both parents taught me that the moneyless life was pure, simple, clean and happy. The notion that affluence always involved corrupt, base, duplicitous and unhappy people made an impression, as was intended, and it took years to shake it off. Of course when their own status improved, their judgment shifted accordingly; only those who were born into wealth were woe-be-gotten and one was to pity them. The poor were also to be pitied. They weren't the only ones who did this; it's a load of self-serving rubbish.

I've heard whiny blokes pine for solitude and a cabin in the woods - largely this is articulated loudly and meant to aggravate a long-suffering spouse.
I've heard a version of it in which a bloke wants to live like Quentin Crisp, hoarding games and comic books "in peace and quiet". This, too, is meant to irritate someone within earshot.

I don't have any idea why some need to articulate odious beliefs, but there's no budging them.

I think it is something people say because if they can't be wealthy, then pretend that wealthy people are miserable and evil ( ... )

Perhaps wealthy people don't think about money because they don't have to, and, because let's face it, the pursuit of money is a bit vulgar. Perhaps the poor are constantly thinking about it in one way or another. I'm generalising ( ... )
