As many of you have observed, the Goucher campus is inhabited by an ever-growing number of deer. Although most of us enjoy their presence on the campus, the deer bring with them numerous problems including Lyme disease, motor vehicle collisions, and environmental damage to the grounds and woods. In response to community concerns, the Risk Management Committee consulted with a Maryland Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist who recommended that the college strongly consider reducing the size of the herd through a managed hunt; this recommendation was based on his estimate that a campus of Goucher's size could adequately support a herd of 40 deer but is currently supporting a herd of approximately 200 deer ( ... )

Another recent alumni here, I first heard about the issue from an article in The Baltimore Sun. It has a lot of interviews, and Sungar making several references to Bambi.

Check it out:

Hunts in residential or urban areas tend to be conducted with bows, not guns. According to the sources I have talked to, the chief reasons for the cull are the threat of Lyme disease and the lack of resources for the deer themselves.

I have talked to public safety about the potential of contraceptives and immunocontraceptives, and not received much response yet on the idea (their sole source of information seems to be the DNR). The Humane Society (HSUS) sponsors immunicontraception programs, and has information about other population control methods.

I find Sungar's references to Bambi more than a little patronizing.

I think he had a good point, but executed it extremely poorly.
