Self-realisation Sunday.

May 20, 2007 19:01

Life is starting to come into focus, mentally, and the last week has seen me feeling a little more 'awake' and thoughtful each day. This was handy as it contained many wonderful experiences :-)

Read on for stuff I've mainly posted for my own benefit, but which you're welcome to snoop on.

I think many of the problems I have with motivation and getting my shit sorted largely stem from the fact I tend to do things for those I care for and not for myself*. I find it practically impossible to do things for an audience of one.

I watch films/TV with less joy when on my tod and I rarely, if ever, go drinking or enjoy 'the arts' by myself. My gamut of interests doesn't expand and I re-read the same books I've always read and enjoyed*.

The point of this is realising that (a) I need to see my friends more as they're a great catalyst for having a wonderful life and very nice people to boot, which is kinda tough since I've got one foot in Sheffield and one foot in London at the moment (b) I really need to consider this aspect when looking for Miss Right and (c) I *really* need a Miss. Right.

OK, so I do read for an audience of one. They're an escape doncherknow.

The upshot is that I'm losing weight, changing shape, smiling more and with thought, effort and a little luck, life may actually turn out to be rather good this year.

Books read this year (that I remember):

A Day At The Pool in Kigali - Gil Courtemanche
Amsterdam - Ian McEwan
Perfume - Patrick Süskind
The Time Traveller's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger
The Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch
Freakonomics - Steven D. Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner
The Cryptographer - Tobias Hill
A Walk in the Woods - Bill Bryson
Neither Here Nor There - Bill Bryson
Notes from a Small Island - Bill Bryson
Notes on a Scandal - Zoe Heller
ChickenHawk - Robert Mason
A Big Boy Did it and Ran Away - Christopher Brookmyre
Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman (Re-read)
Starship Troopers - Robert Heinlein
Watership Down - Richard Adams (RR)
Northern Lights - Phillip Pullman (RR)
Fragile Things - Neil Gaiman
The Mythical Man Month - Fred Brooks
A History Of Tractors In Ukranian - Marina Lewycka
Zodiac - Neal Stephenson (RR)

* Not to say I'm not selfish from time to time. I am, of course, breathtakingly self-centred to the excusion of good sense more often than I care to remember.

* Thanks especially to
imyril,
longhairedhippy and
evil_book_cult for helping break me out of the sci-fi/fantasy book ghetto with some excellent lends and recommedations.
