Hi all! I wrote this one a couple days ago and thought I should post it to get this challenge going! Enjoy!

Title: Charms
Author: lindy_grl123
Prompt: Orchideous
Rating: G
Warning: Mild angst
Author’s Notes: Took me so much finagling to get this to meet the 500 word limit. Enjoy!

Shielded and safe behind the curtain around his bed, Neville practiced magic every night, trying to perfect his substandard skills. Though it was hard work, he was getting much better at his charms. At this rate, he might even have a chance at an E on his Charms O.W.L. at the end of the year.

There was one charm he particularly liked, but for some reason he could never seem to do it just right. After weeks of practice, he had grown frustrated and was ready to give up. One more try, he thought to himself, screwing up his face in concentration.

He whispered the charm and heard several soft objects fall on his comforter. Lighting his wand, he looked at the flowers in front of him. They were beautiful. Their color was solid, their petals and stems unbent. Neville smiled. He had done it.

"Orchideous," Neville muttered outside the library the next day. Bright purple flowers shot out of his wand, just as they had the night before. His heart pounded as he scooped them up and arranged them in a small but pretty bouquet. He tucked the bouquet into the sleeve of his robes as best he could to hide it from view.

Though it took him several minutes to get up the courage to actually open the door to the library, he was proud of himself for not turning back now. With his hands behind his back, he walked slowly through the room. No one seemed to take much notice of him, but he was used to that.

Sitting in her usual chair in the corner, facing the wall, was Luna. The moment Neville saw the back of her head, her blond hair hanging behind her like a curtain, his heart stopped in his chest. He quickly ducked behind a bookshelf and tried to calm himself as he thought about what to say. He had imagined this moment for months, but every word he had thought to say to her was gone. For almost twenty minutes, Neville stood there, practicing a speech of sorts and unconsciously clutching the flowers in his fist.

"Neville."

His head snapped up at the greeting. Luna was standing in front of him, her bag slung over her shoulder. The late morning sun shone from behind her, outlining her in light. The words Neville had been so carefully rehearsing jumbled up in his mind, and none of them wanted to come out. He stood there, dumb, with Luna watching him curiously.

"History of Magic," she finally said, smiling strangely at him. Seeming to think this sufficient explanation for where she was going, she turned and left the library.

Neville brought his hands in front of him and looked down at his bouquet. The stems were crushed from his grip, and the petals were wrinkled and falling off from being stuffed inside his sleeve. He stared for a moment, and then pulled out his wand and whispered another charm he had recently refined.

"Incendio."
