Your dad and my father-in-law need to get together and go golfing or something. That splitting-one-person-into-two and not letting such a paltry thing as reality dissuade him sounds a tremendous amount like my FIL (who is also over 70... hmm... My own parents are still in their early 60s so maybe something happens when you turn 70?). I'm assuming that sitting him down and showing him the DVD boxes for series 3 and 4 clearly showing the actor being the same person probably wouldn't do the trick?
My parents also loved Hamlet! We watched it in glorious HD and let me tell you how relieved I was that the thing that I quite daftly trotted off to England to see last year got their approval. I would have felt like a complete prat otherwise.
