How much do people change as adults? A friend of mine was just venting to me because he was talking w/ his ex-girlfriend (a long-term girlfriend, but ex- as of 8 years ago) and she made some fairly negative assumptions about his character. When he defended himself, she said, “people don’t change that much once they’re adults.” The funny thing is - ( Read more... )

I don't think you can take a chicken and make it a frog, but I think you can take a chicken and make it into all sorts of different chickeny dishes.

Bad, bad metaphor. But, I think you can and do change as an adult. Still are recognizable as The Self You Used To Be, but with layers of flavor and molecular change....

Gah. I shouldn't try to write today.

Yes, yes - I think that’s what I’m getting at too. You still have to be you, but you can be a good, bad or indifferent you.

Or, if you’re theaddictedpoet, a fantabulous you!

I think life being the way it is, we can change from day to day. There are so many lessons to learn...from death, to finances, to child rearing, to being married, etc. How could those experiences not change you? To be a totally different person, eh, that one I'm not so sure about. But to be drastically different--I think it possible.

I think it would be really sad if your personality remained sealed despite interaction w/ the world. I know that I am pretty constantly questioning my beliefs and motives. Then again, maybe being a questioning person is what I am and always will be!

Yeah, I have changed too. But I am still me. I mean, the core of me is still the same. I am the same person. But aspects of me are different. I have learned things and experienced things that change the way I interact with the world. I enjoy things I didn't like before, and don't like things I liked to do earlier in life. If people can't change then what is the point? Plus the entire psychology profession would be moot. (Or mute as my cube neighbor says. God I hate that one! Sorry aside.)

I think it's actually harder to change someone elses image of who you are, than it is to actually change who you are. The battle is in your ability to sell the new you...until then, people will still treat you like the old you.

The chicken has to want to change, however. smille February 13 2004, 06:26:04 UTC
No change happens unless you desire it to.

You can only become Garlic Chicken if you want it.
