I've been feeling a bit down the last few days, and I'm not sure why. Perhaps it is related to what Neil has dubbed "The Chinababy Syndrome." I am actually of two minds about Hanukkah. On the one hand, I am all for holidays. I love to sit in the candlelight on Shabbat, so the more candles, the better, say I. But it's such a minor holiday and I hate the way that it has been made into some kind of substitute Christmas. I mean, I never see anything in the mall at Passover or Rosh Hashanah, say, but at Christmas-time there will always be a menorah stuck amongst the holiday trees as a sign of respect "for our Jewish customers." Or people will say "Happy Hanukkah" to me weeks after it has ended, because they just know that it's "The Jewish Christmas." I know people mean well and I don't really take offense, but personally, I'd just as well have people wish me Merry Christmas under those circumstances. Around the people I know, it's so secularized that I don't really feel that it interferes w/ my religious principles. (Of course, it goes both ways. I know a Jewish guy who refused to accept a holiday gift because the bearer called it a "Christmas present." Honestly. Jerk. I would ( ... )
