I have so rarely found myself happy with the Harper & Bush governments, I thought I'd make a PSA about one of their successes.

Speaking of treaty ratification by the US, did you hear that ratification of the Convention on the Law of the Sea was a major point of discussion at Clinton's confirmation hearing. Moreover, the consensus at the hearing appeared to be that it ought to be ratified, and that she was going to get that done.

I did not. That's really exciting.

The 1982 convention on the law of the sea seems a good treaty and it'd a happy thing to see it ratified.

Now, if only everyone would agree that Nunavut is an archipelego...

Too bad that if push came to shove, the Russians would probably provide logistical support to Danish efforts to assert seabed rights based on a non-archipelago baseline, as they'd likely also improve their right to engage in non-innocent passage between some of the islands.

Perhaps Canada should invest in some great big armoured fortifications near the entrances to the disputed-internal waters, and a Navy that specializes in anti-submarine operations so they can take out anyone trying to slip past those guns.

Yeah, I guess that one of those things has already been developed.
