William had been there the night it had happened and yet even he managed to not be sure how it had happened. He supposed he should have woken his wife when he'd slipped into bed late last night, given her the news himself, but, quite frankly, he'd been exhausted. And he'd known she was likely to be upset.

Not that he was thrilled, of course, but William didn't tend to show such emotion, not openly, not even to his own wife. The summer had seemingly brought them closer, but that didn't mean he was suddenly going to become obvious with his emotions.

He leaned against the frame of the kitchen door and studied the girl for a moment, feeling a twinge of something as he watched her take in the news. Maybe it was guilt at having her read it in the bloody paper, maybe it was sympathy for how the news hit her ( ... )

It was a good thing that Arianna did not yet know that her husband had witnessed this tragedy; oh, she should obviously know eventually, but an overload of emotion would perhaps be too much for such a proper young woman to handle. Especially in front of her still-new husband.

She looked up as she heard William's voice, her eyes wet but not quite crying. "William," she spoke, voice cracking a bit as she put the paper down and stood carefully. "What.. what happened?"

The article had been vague and spoke mostly of suspicions, theories; no, she knew that her husband would know more than some silly reporter for the Daily Prophet. She gingerly picked up a steaming cup of breakfast tea and approached him, holding it out in offering.

"Surely there will be punishment for this??" she added, frowning deeply. Someone would have to show whomever did this that respected Pureblooded men were not to be trifled with. They must be taught a lesson!

William hadn't exactly seen what had happened, precisely. As far as he knew, no one had. But he'd been nearby when it had happened, one of the first to arrive in the room once his body had fallen.

"He's not saying," William muttered, somewhat irritated as he accepted for the tea, taking a long sip before continuing. "Not that he's one to overshare, of course, but it'd be nice to know what happened, at least."

He shook her head and pursed his lips together, deep in thought for a moment. "My best guess is one of those fools from the Order. I'm confident justice will be served once we find out who."

Arianna watched him carefully as he sipped the tea and then spoke once more. She shook her head, then looked away thoughtfully as she ran a finger along the etchings and designs of her own teacup. "Terrible," she muttered, frowning deeply. "Absolutely terrible."

Her mind was reeling with thoughts and questions, wondering just why anyone would have had an agenda against Lucius Malfoy. Or had he merely been in the wrong place at the wrong time?

She glanced back to William, studying his face carefully and silently. She wasn't sure how she felt about their relationship, but she was at least no longer afraid to even talk with him. And she knew, deep down, that she worried about his safety.

"You're being very careful, aren't you?" she asked softly, brows lifting into a pleading expression.
