Vox is closing. Alternatives?

I wouldn't care, except that I've been using a Vox blog to keep track of things on my horse -- when she's had shots, etc. It's been handy to hit a tag and call up her worming schedule and so on. It's limited access to just a few friends, and really for my personal use only ( Read more... )

It doesn't have a pre-emptive calendar, but you could set up a limited access blog on Dreamwidth -- I have spare codes and it is very similar to LJ (being built on the same code base).

For the pinging, I use Google Calendar which reminds me of various obligations through an email alert.

Thanks, ancarett :-) Would it be easy (for someone who is kind of lazy and dumb...) to migrate the journal from Vox to Dreamwidth? I don't want to lose the history.

Because Vox is built on a very different code base and no one ever built a real official export tool, WordPress or Movable Type are the only easy options. There was another export tool that could save your blog to a Outlook-style mail file, but I'm not sure if that's still working or not.

If I were you, I'd export to Wordpress and set it up as a private blog/archive -- you can then either keep posting there or retain it as a separate archive. Yours was the only Vox blog I was still reading when the notice came out that things were going to close up!

Thanks for the suggestion! I didn't know about the reminders on Facebook. I went ahead and migrated the account over to Wordpress because it accepted my tags. But maybe I can set up Facebook to ping me.
