This came out really lovely! I can totally see them finding solace together, and never needing to talk about it. Well done!

This is breathtaking! I'm so glad I came back to read it. Truly, truly wonderful.

You've conveyed a really human experience here and made their comforts and fears very palpable. This is truly what it was like for them living on New Caprica--not devoid of joy but not devoid of pain. I love that they had each other. To me, it is completely believable and you've written it so earnestly.

I actually love thinking about them having each other in this way, and your paragraph at the end about the possible impermanence of it all is just so perfect too.

Hard to pick a favorite part, but this entire passage:

It’s in the way he doesn’t need words to communicate with you, nor you with him. One smile, and he knows you had a breakthrough with one of the kids at school today; one sigh, and you know he lost a patient he’d worked so hard to save. And after these realizations, words are once again not needed to share either joy or comfort - sometimes both. Gentle hands and soft mouths take care of this, and you can both rest easier that night. It ( ... )

This was wonderful, and it makes so much sense that they would be drawn to each other for mutual support and comfort. The part about detention was so subtle but left no doubt what Laura had been through and how she, and he, viewed that experience. You’re lucky, and you both know this; you don’t suffer any permanent disfigurement, as Saul and so many others have. But broken fingers are sure to make teaching more difficult, and the deep lacerations on your arms, while superficial, are a clear warning to the rest of the populace
This just killed me. I kept coming back to this part because the horror you convey here is so quiet and accepted, that bad as it is, it could be so much worse. It's heartbreaking that things are at a point where Laura can be almost casual about her wounds. And that she knows what it does to Cottle but she can't tell him she'll stop being in harm's way is so Laura.

Thank you so much! The detention section was one of my favorite parts. It had to be one of the most terrifying things for Cottle, but it's also one area where there's not much she can do or say to comfort him.

Sorry it took so long to reply!
