Urgh.

People like you (and like me) will always be considered unromantic or overly critical for seeing these things for what they are - pure selfishness on the part of the guy (not, of course, that only guys can be selfish or controlling). The incidents you describe are grotesque - but they're subtly grotesque, as they can easily be mistaken by many as expressions of love.

It was also pretty thoughtless imho, given that the woman in question has been racing a bike for 4 hours and (even if she's massively fitter than you or I) probably also just wants to be able to breathe!
