Email for publication?

I have upcoming article related to my graduate work. I'm currently using my university email as the author contact.  But I finished my degree since the article was first submitted and it looks like my that email will expire a couple of months after printing.  So, I need to change the email listed on the proof pages before returning them ( Read more... )

I would strongly suggest setting up a permanent professional email. It sets up a clear boundary between the different spheres of your life. This is useful in terms of presentation (somebody googling your professional email should only get back results about your professional life) but also in terms of being able to separate our your personal time on the internet from your professional time, which is good work hygiene.

Not a bad idea. Right now I'm using an email with my name in it for both personal communication with family and for professional stuff.

choosing a domain name for yourself that's unique is pretty easy and costs about $10/year. once you do this you have control over things and can change providers, ... at will.

gmail will host your mailbox at no charge (you can see a comparison of their product lines here. it works exactly like the public gmail you may use now ... and it doesn't carry the stigma of an email address from the free email services.

I would set up a professional gmail account - something close to your publication name. That will give you an institution-free address to use for some time. It's unlikely you'll get a ton of spam from publication, but gmail can handle it if you do.

My main account is first.last@gmail.com, so I wasn't sure if I need another one.

Here we're required to use our university email on publications. We also have the option to keep that email address following graduation, as an alumni account. Do you have that option and requirement with your school?

I only get to keep it for a year. There's no requirement. I'll check up on an alumni email though.

The thing is that a lot of people change institutions and will not keep those email addresses forever. I mean any grad students will only have their institutional email for a limited time. I don't think it's a big deal if you only have that address for another year. I would never just email someone based on the email in the paper - I always goodle and check where they are now.

Either way not likely to generate any spam, I have a friend who graduated with her Ph.D. and is currently a stay-at-home mom with no affiliation but is still publishing and she uses her gmail account.

Ask the university to set that e-mail address up for forwarding. It's a trivial thing to do for them, and you can get e-mail sent to that address forwarded to your gmail account.
