Andorra Pt.II: of uillean pipes and teeny jams...

Aug 31, 2009 00:26

EDITED: to add that Photobucket doesn't want to play the 'successfully embedding videos' game, so you'll have to wait till Florenci uploads his montage of the Ordino gig to YouTube, I'm afraid ( Read more... )

Yeah, same in NZ, I just wasn't sure how international (or not) the word was. It's quite common, after all, I guess!
Same thing happened with hoover (popular brand of vacuum, though I've personally always said 'vacuum') and sellotape.

The photos don't actually do the fog justice, it was pretty awesome!

I totally understand the dinky jam thing, I have always found them cool, mind you this also extends to those cute mini glass coke bottles too.

Oh, it's pretty much cute little anything for me, though I've noticed that an unbudgeable requirement for me is that the thing in question be functional.

So, a little thing can be quite cute but it doesn't grab me in the way that a teeny functional thing does.

Well this does at least save you from becoming one of those sad old ladies who collects hundreds of twee little figurines.

Let us give thanks...

Although, frankly, I don't care what any other old ladies collect,as long as they don't insist on me enjoying them for hours on end!

Speaking of dinky things, though...

What Ordino also has is the Nicolai Siadristy Museum of Miniature Sculptures. It's near impossible to find shots of his stuff on the net and I can't find the postcards we bought last time we were there, in amongst the chaos that we call a house.

I found a couple of examples for you, though:

1. A pair of swallows, with their babies (in gold) in a nest which is actually half of a poppy seed.

I had to look up launeddas after that write-up: apparently (all-knowing Wikipedia) they're played using circular breathing, making them the discerning bagpipe-player's alternative to the didgeridoo. And the Siadristy Museum looks fantastic! Should we ever happen to be in Andorra...

Heh, man I'm disorganized - i actually discovered that a few days later, which means it's in a later post, which I haven't got around to putting up yet! :D

Yeah, it's pretty amazing and bloody hard to do (yes, I tried ;D).

The museum is really cool. There are only about 10 or 12 sculptures but boy are they worth it!
