Yeah I think it is still worth getting an Ipod, I have an mp3 player and same thing really. I'm not too fussed about having the latest thing in town, quite the opposite in fact but there are times when you may want to listen to your favourite music or maybe just put the headphones in your ears in order to stop hearing that bloody kid who's been crying for the last 45 minutes of the train journey.
They will go out of fashion, undoubtedly, but Itunes has a massive amount of music which won't just disappear. Frankly I think Itunes and Apple will steer the new technologies into their direction. They have the market and money to do so.
I don't think there is much difference between brands. My Mp3 is from Creative and has worked fine for the last 4 years. I'd get a relatively small one as I use mine to substitue a USB drive as well. Basically Apple and all its 'I' products have many accesories which no-one really needs or wants.
