So is an "Islamist" someone who supports Islam, but is not a Muslim?

Yeah, I've had a similar progression of thinking about this term. I initially thought it was quite a clear distinction between belief in the religion and belief that the system needs to be spread. However, I think these days that it's simply a derogatory term for people who *don't* think that Islam should be spread as a system ( ... )

I'm not a big fan of inventing words to describe things that we can already describe. Especially ones that sound like they dumb down our knowledge.

I kinda assumed it was a portmanteau word of "islamic" and "terrorist" created by sloppy journalismists.

Whatever its origin, it does strike me as sloppy. Almost "newspeak".
