Grain-free Dog Treats

Dec 13, 2007 21:36

Anyone have any recipes for making grain-free dog treats/cookies? I'm not really a good baker (In that I could never make up my own recipes and figure out what to replace with what to make grain free) and google has proved discouraging...

Thanks in advance for any help!

I use the "You Bake'Em Dog Biscuits Cookbook" and just swap out the wheat flour for the flour of choice. (You can use chickpea or white bean flour for grain-free goodies, or rice flour if you're just concerned about corn and wheat.)

Thanks! My main thing was I wasn't really sure what to swap out wheat flour with! I'm just starting to get the home cooking bug : )

They're a lot of fun to make, and the book even has some great basic "liver leather" recipes and such.

There are two version of the book -- one is full-length, and one is a condensed one with just a handful of recipes that comes with cute doggie-themed cookie cutters. I'd recommend the full-length one for more options (although the cookie cutters are cute.)

Both are available on Amazon for pretty cheap. :)

I've heard that dried liver treats are easy to make and well accepted by dogs, but I've never made or fed them myself (since I only have cats, and the one who likes liver like it raw). But as I understand it, cut beef or calf liver into 1/2 inch slabs, spread on a pan, and bake at 225F or 250F until it's dried out (do this on a warm day, with the windows open, especially if you have roommates). Cut into cubes once it's dry, store in the freezer.

This sounds fabulous (and pretty easy), and something that will work well with training. Thanks!
