Dates

I guess this is a style question more than a hard rule. But I recently saw a poster of Andrew Brietbart, with his dates at the bottom listed February 1st, 1969 - March 1st, 2012. It's not typical to use "st" after numbers in a date like this, or is it correct and most people just do not do it?

Thanks.

There's nothing the matter with "1st", "21st", "23rd", "17th", "2nd", etc. This kind of usage is equally correct as plain numerals.

I think it's just a style difference; the important thing is consistency.

They're both correct. Anything but slash notation as 6/5/2012 could mean either June 5th or the 6th of May depending upon local tradition. Perilous if you're traveling anywhere, hilarious if it happens to someone else.
