stats...and don't forget to pack notuglier July 25 2009, 14:23:03 UTC
i've got one good stats book here, actually, pretty well-written (as stats go), but unfortunately it occasionally (frequently) gets things wrong. i corrected in the margin the stuff i noticed, but buyer beware. got a second, but it's written for engineers, who are apparently all cyborg and shit.

also, shouldn't you be packing?

i am counting! that's quite a nice frame; there's a shot like that from the beginning of the apartment, which may be more interesting since the apartment is ostensibly a romantic comedy.

also, have you ever read celine's voyage au bout de la nuit?

i haven't; is it a better reference than my inconsistent kafka ones? and yes i remember that scene in the apartment, and i also remember thinking that was an interesting movie, feminist-wise, but i don't remember exactly why i thought that.

i actually like your kafka references gunslingingbird July 25 2009, 21:39:19 UTC
and the castle is probably a better analogue for what you're going through than the trial.

so, no it (celine) isnt more apropos, but it's french and contemporary (well, twentieth century) so i was curious if you had read it and had any thoughts on it. i'm reading it now. for fun! reading! for fun! what a novelty.

i dont really know why you might think that about the apartment. i've always thought it's a really rich movie because, for a comedy and romance, it's profoundly melancholy (though i wouldn't call it a "dark" comedy).

something about sluts and stuff, i think. i've recently been reading for fun too, and it's just as crazy as you say. maybe next i'll read the celine and then we can talk about it or something.

crowdy still works at emory (tech stuff) so you could hit him up if you still need help. he's a whizz, etc.

also, i think most people who work in college work nights & weekends only. its sort of how it goes.

p.s. i empathize with you about the school crap. i also have to do tons of bullshit things. like get a physical. which is really annoying since i'm trying to coordinate moving cross country as well.

oh, i meant, "bummer, dude" about the working nights & weekends. i worked nights & weekends all through high school & most of college & it sucked. it actually made me really resent school. i make exactly the same money with a degree as i made without one.

i think it's fucked up that they basically force you to put your professional life on hold if you want to gamble on something that's supposed to make it better but might at the same time stunt you in this other way.

i totally agree. its retarded. but i also think college is nothing more than a money-making scheme. (i.e. who the hell doesn't have a graduate degree these days; the market is totally flooded.) but hey, here i go, off to grad school. at least yr getting a degree in something useful.

also, aw, i hope you didn't take my comment as "suck up that's just the way it is" cause no, it totally blows that colleges make it so hard for you to do both.
