They just put 5 lbs of gunpowder into a tree cannon. After they ignited it the cannon wasn't there anymore...heheh.

tree cannon? do you mean to say they tried to make a cannon out of a tree trunk?

precisely that...apparently the myth was about a village in medeival germany or somewhere that made a cannon out of a tree and had it explode on them, or something like that.
