dark colors are bad for any place with little light.

find either a light color (white or light blue) or a bright one (like red or orange) and accent with the warm earthy colors. pick a primary, secondary, and tertiary and go with that. any more colors will probably get too confusing and mish-mash.

How do you accent it? You mean paint a stripe or a border? I am drawing a blank.

it depends on what you're trying to do. accent colors are small amounts of strong (usually complimentary) colors set on more neutral colors. like an off-white or rusty orange pillow on a dark brown couch.
