Work politics and sexual harrassment

Jan 23, 2007 21:50

Some developer guys at work asked me to go to lunch with them last week. There were five of us but we were all going into one car. In the parking lot on the way to the car I said, "I can sit in the middle in the back" and a guy said, "you can sit on my lap" in a flirtatious voice. My only reply was a shocked, "Wow.." and then someone mentioned ( Read more... )

Keep him in the professional circles. No Tetris or mariokart :( but no unwanted advances.

Two words: Sexual Harassment.
Keep records if possible, perhaps even audio recordings. If he goes too far, you have enough things to get him removed, boss's son or no.

I agree that professional distance is the key here, if he can't handle a friendship with out sexually harrassing you, then you need to be his colleague and no more.

Sorry to hear you're going through this. Has he met your bf?

Agreed with the previous commentors. That's extremely shitty and I'm very sorry you're having to deal with it. I know you don't want to, and I understand why you don't want to, but I honestly think telling one of your superiors is the thing to do. Honestly, not only is it completely wrong that you be forced to deal with such a work environment, but there's a good chance he has either done this before, is doing it to other women right now, or will do it again, and by reporting this you will be adding important evidence to his personal record. No woman deserves to deal with that.

But like I said, I totally understand why you don't want to. Jeopardizing your own career is a big deal, and it's complete crap that it has to be that way, but I know that it is. There's supposed to be safegaurds in place that protect women from that sort of thing, but legal ramifications or not, it still happens. Disgusting but true.

Whatever you do, I hope everything turns out the best for you. That's an awful thing to have to deal with.

Keep a record of what happens. Save it for when something seriously fucked up happens. You say he's your boss's son? Hrmm... perhaps bringing the issue up with his old man isn't a bad idea. This is purely a social issue, and shouldn't even be showing up on the political radar. If you feel that this will jeopardize your career, it's time to start looking for another gig. If all else fails, have Will beat the kid up. pretty simple I'd say.
