The weather has been beautiful the last 2 days. We had a little bit of rain and cooler temps for a while, but summer is definately here

I grew up in Virginia, 1947-1955. I left all that heat and humidity behind. Beautiful country. I love visiting the east now and then. Prettying up your yard is easy. Just be retired, willing to go into heavy debt and be green from the neck down. ^_^
When we lived in CA, we had snail problems. We used to put out a saucer with beer in it (what a waste!!!!!) and they would end up in that instead of the flowers and veggies. It really worked. (We got that tip from someone at the feed and garden store. Prunedale was very rural back then)
I know beer works well. (works well in my stomach too) I have been using Corry's and it works well. The snails just breed too fast. They reproduce 100 or more eggs a month. The catch with any snail bait is having it where they crawl. Watering washes it away. Corry's, I am told, breaks down into water and CO2 in just a few days. Onward to battle. CHARGE!!!
I just did the same thing in one of my beds. There had been a lot of subsidence over the years, so I pulled up all the stepping stones, dug out the plants, and put down 5 big bags of dirt. Then I re-laid the stones and re-planted the plants. It was a lot of work to get it looking like it used to look, only higher!
These recent rains have gotten my garden looking a bit raggedy, but I won't be able to get out there until next week, as I'm going away for a few days. I feel like I've got the tiger by the tail with my garden sometimes.
By the way, thank you for "Summertime" the other day. I love it! I have Ella Fitzgerald's version, and yours makes the perfect counterpoint.
I still have a border of stone in the front yard to finish. There is a real sense of satisfaction when the garden work is done and one can sit in a puddle of sweat with a cold one and gloat. We have only had a few sprinkles in Roseville. I shall fertilize the lawn after mowing this week. I am staying agressive this year in attacking any brown spots or other problems. The youngest daughter Tia, hubby Andre and 2 children, Kayla and Isaiah will arrive Friday and stay for the weekend. Lookning forward to that, but it means I need to get busy to be prepared. Enjoy your few days away. Thanks for the comment on Summertime, It strokes my ego!
I am doing the same...got back from Louisiana late Sunday night to fairly heavy rain but awoke Monday morning to bright sun and warm warm warm...so off I went to the nursery.
My calendula were past it, and I pulled them out replacing with summer annuals...I will fertilize and cultivate today...
That was the back beds....I will next start on the front beds, which are more problematic.
Yes, the growth this time of year is phenomenal and rewarding...
I have 2 beds beside the sidewalk leading to our front door. Over the past week, between sprinkles, I tore out all the weeds, cleaned the bed surface of debrie and put down ground cloth to inhibit weed growth. Then I covered the whole works with marble chips. It looks just like some old folks have moved in and are 'dolling' up the house. ^_^ I'll do some pictures soon, but now I must go and tackle what is left of the stone leveling project. I still have a dozen plants to set as well.
It is one of the rites of passage; getting older, getting arthritis, but getting out and doing anyhow. Most of it is just the arthritis and stiffness from old age (and not using the body enough to stay in shape). If I ease up for a couple of days most of the aches go away. Thank you for caring.
