Severus saw Ginevra flashing a quick, amused smile at her husband, and his breath caught. His traitorous mind brought up memory after memory of Lily looking at him like that, of all the good times they’d had… of his betrayal of her and her betrayal of him.

He felt the despair of losing her well up within him again, and he struggled to remain calm.

“I think you’ll like this,” Hermione said into his ear as she offered him a treacle tart.

He forced a smile.

“I love you.”

She blushed prettily and kissed him in front of her friends.

His heart clenched as he remembered the dark mark being seared into his skin. His breath hitched; it physically hurt knowing he’d been such a fool.

He looked around the room, desperately trying to find something, anything, that could make him forget, prove he was better, make it right. His eyes fell on his wife.

“I love you.”

Hermione looked up from the book she was reading with a smile. “I love you, too.”

She looked back down, still smiling, and Severus felt his heart unclench just a little, though the shame still hung around his neck like a noose.

Severus stood in the doorway, watching as Hermione peeled potatoes. Her back was to him and her hips were swaying to music only she could hear. She must have sensed his presence, because she turned to look at him with an expectant expression.

He smiled and sauntered over, taking the knife from her hand, while giving her a lingering kiss.

“I love you.”

She playfully bumped him with her hips. “I know. Now please chop-chop, else we’ll never have dinner.”

His heart swelled with contentment even before she pecked him on the cheek and said, “And I love you, too.”
