Hermione dropped The Daily Prophet down on the breakfast table, narrowly missing her cup of coffee. The plate with freshly buttered toast was not as fortunate.
‘Severus?’ she inquired. ‘Rita Skeeter claims that Dumbledore was gay. Is she telling the truth? Did you know about that?’
Severus did not respond immediately. His thoughts drifted back to a certain day more than 20 years ago - the day when he had promised the late Headmaster that he would do anything to keep Lily safe.
‘Yes,’ he replied after a while, in a voice that was barely louder than a whisper. ‘I knew.’
