They thought they’d seen the last scar of battle.
The curse took two weeks to manifest itself. The effects were excruciating.
Potions could only ease the pain. There was no known cure.
She resumed her life under a cloud of sorrow. He stood by her side.
Her research helped dozens of children. She could have none of her own.
In love, they married, destined to remain childless.
Until this Christmas Eve, when Severus stood at his bench, inhaling aromatic potions. This one smelled correct. He dared to hope that this year he’d give Hermione the one gift she wanted most.

Hand in hand, they left the aromatic potions of the apothecary and walked down the adjacent Muggle street. A glimpse of the mother and baby in a nativity shot pain through her heart.
Severus drew her to his chest. “Someday, my love. Someday.”
