I shall be there, at present I believe I am putting up Maz and myself, Annette and Phil, Dez and Nert at a cottage near Ullswater (long story). Maz and myself at least have the Friday off so will be available to kick around all day then! (It's only about 2 hours travel for us.)
Point. I'd say assume amateurness as its not something Ailsa has ever done before... but if there's something interesting and worth it, take the risk :P
If you're doing Scafell Pike, how about doing it from Langdale so you can incorporate the Langdale Pikes as part of that walk? I've been there and it is very nice - if I remember rightly, there's a few tarns part way up like Blea Tarn, which are just beautiful.
Actually, I've been to the Lakes a few times - one place I'd recommend if you get time is Ambleside. There aren't any massive hills around there but it's a simple, pretty little village just four miles north of Windermere and you will walk around it in a very short time. You know, just in case any of you don't want a big hill walk, more of an amble (haha...). There isn't much there apart from the house on the bridge and a rather lovely water wheel.
I think I've got some guides you could borrow but they're in Stone so if I get a trip home before I you go to the Lakes, I'll try to dig them out for you.
Anyone who has the chance should stop by Grassmere on the way up BTW. The gingerbread shop there sells the nicest gingerbread in existence, and awesome rum butter!
I second the gingerbread comment - absolutely gorgeous.
Oh and if anyone likes jigsaw puzzles, also in Grasmere is a little newsagent and store called Barneys, which has THE biggest collection of jigsaw puzzles in the entire universe. I think 18000 pieces was the biggest I saw there. 18k pieces - what the hell?!?
Hey guys - still planning to go but due to so much extra stuff going on beforehand never got round to booking a hotel (or even knowing the best way to get there - gonna assume train). Can anyone tell me where's the best place to be looking for rooms so I don't end up 50 miles from everyone else?
Not sure if Lex and Andrew are coming (and still in Oz so wont find out till I get home) so right now its just me, who has the time off and every intention of coming.

If you're keen on hotel rather than self catering, then Keswick area is the right place, or Ullswater it seems from above posts!
