Character Name: Tear Grants

Series: Tales of the Abyss

Point in canon: Just after descending into the core
Character Background: Mystearica Aura Fende is one of the remaining two descendants of Yulia Jue, the woman that read the Score, a prophecy that foretold of unprecedented prosperity for the world of Auldrant. After the destruction of her homeland, the Isle of Hod, at the unwilling hands of her brother, Vandesdelca, both he and their mother (who was pregnant with Tear at the time) fell below the ground into the Qliphoth, a world beneath the surface filled with miasma and sludge. They were taken by the mayor of a haven called Yulia City, but Tear’s mother died soon after giving birth to her. They were fairly happy though, in the hidden city with their adoptive grandfather, and even after Van left for the world above to join the Oracle Knights, he still visited and devoted time to his little sister.

However over the years, these visits became less frequent and when Van did spend time with her, Tear noticed there was something odd about him. See, Van had found out that Hod’s destruction had been written in the Score and as such, no one had done anything to try and save it or its people, all for the purpose of upholding the Score and its promise of prosperity. That didn’t go over so well and Van decided that a world chained to the Score was better off dead.

Unaware of her brother’s true intentions, Tear came up with an idea that would allow her to leave Yulia City and be able to see Van more often. She would join the Oracle Knights too! However, as Van wanted to keep Tear safe and away from what he was planning, he sent a woman by the name of Legretta to train her privately…in Yulia City.

Her plans foiled, Tear was stuck-up and bratty to Legretta at first, but as she trained with the major, her respect for the woman grew and eventually began to see her as a motherly/older sister figure. She finished her training years and earned a position in the Intelligence division of the Oracle Knights. So surely now, with what she’s accomplished, she could see her brother Van. But when she went to do just that, she overheard him and Legretta speaking about their plans and how it would annihilate the people of the Outer Lands.

Horrified and forced to come to terms with what her beloved older brother had become, Tear decided that as one who shared the same blood, she had a duty to stop him. She attempted to assassinate him, though the main character, Luke, got in her way and ended caught up in events where Van’s machinations were revealed and Luke, Tear and the main party resolved to make sure that he doesn’t get his way.

Due to her training as a soldier and the events surrounding her homeland and family, Tear is a fairly serious, no-nonsense girl, though it’s hard to suppress her feminine side and love of cute things sometimes. She likes to get things done and duty and protecting those who cannot protect themselves is important to her. And even though she knows and understands that sometimes killing and fighting are necessary, she still dislikes violence and prefers a more passive solution.

Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual. She’s the obligatory fan service-y heroine/party member and her attraction to the main character, Luke, is fairly obvious. She’s a member of Auldrant’s “church” too, so was likely raised and educated to be as straight as a board. One could read into her hero-worship of Legretta as something more though.

Sample Post: The white, starched gown she woke up in reminded Tear of when she had her first medical examination upon entering the Oracle Knights. Though she’d only been fourteen or so then, and didn’t have quite so much to try and cover. She pushed herself into a sitting position and looked around the stark room. It wasn’t the same lab she’d fallen asleep in at Belkend. Had they moved her, perhaps?

A small sigh echoed in the sparse room. She wished they hadn’t. The bustle and noise of the scientists and medical staff had managed to distract her somewhat from the mess of worries that occupied her thoughts as of late, but here, in this silence, they threatened to mob her. Tear tried to focus on newest addition to the pile. They hadn’t been sure if they could cure her illness or not, but at least the doctors assured her that medicine could be used to subdue the pain in the meantime. Which, she certainly could use now, as the back of her head was throbbing like mad.

Tear gathered one of the thin sheets around her, as the gown didn’t do its job very well at all, got up and headed to the only door. Maybe she could find a doctor or assistant and inquire about her state of health and what had been decided.

“Welcome to Micro-Metropolis.”

Her hands went for knives that weren’t there; feet planted in a ready stance should she need to fight. But a quick scan of her quarters simply revealed the same thing she’d learned when she woke up; she was alone. However, there was a lit screen on a small desk in the corner. Tear approached it warily.

She had some knowledge of fontech, so from what she could tell it didn’t seem to be dangerous. And the shade of pink it was in was awfully cute.
