Hackett Joins Channel Seven - And Denies Marriage Rumours

Grant Hackett has signed a deal with Channel 7 in Australia which involves spending his limited spare time working for the network.
The Olympic and world champion over 1,500 metres freestyle will make contributions to both the Seven news and sports departments as an occasional reporter as well as appearing on the morning Sunrise programme, according to the Gold Coast's Courier Mail.
"We are obviously going to start with sport and then branch out from there and I am interested in politics and general news, maybe the weather, or I could do things for The Great Outdoors because I am obviously travelling around the world a fair bit," Hackett told reporters.
"I enjoy working with people, I enjoy interviewing people, and I love the spontaneity of television."
While he is looking forward to learning a new business at Seven, Hackett says the role will also allow the audience to see another side of his personality.
"I like to think there is a more humorous side to me that people don't see," he says.
"What I do is serious, and being the captain of the swim team I do play a more serious role, and that's the image I have to promote, but behind closed doors I have always been the funny guy.
"I like to mess around and have a joke and, while you won't always see that side of me doing news or sport, it will come out a lot more doing the lifestyle shows."
Fitting it all in to the punishing regime of a 1,500-m man - work he describes as his "absolute priority" - could be challenging.
"We are just trying to touch on this area of my life now and to fit in bits and pieces where it is appropriate. There will be no days off, my coach won't allow that and I wouldn't let myself do it. I will just have to be smart about it and fit things in when I can, and that's just about good time management."
Which appears to mean delaying any thoughts of matrimony: Hackett's management company denied rumours at the weekend that he has proposed to his girlfriend, singer Candice Alley.
