it had all started with a rubiks cube.
for his tenth birthday, oh sehun was given a rubiks cube by his uncle. "to help sharpen your mind," the aged man had mumbled with a smile as he ruffled the younger one's hair. at the time, sehun's face had glowed in excitement over the new toy.
now, sehun frowned as he sat alone in the neighborhood park. he watched the other children his age play with new sport equipment or handheld gaming devices. he glared at his lap where the colorful squares seemed to taunt him while in disarray. he grumbled words the average ten year old would never say aloud before tossing the cube into the sandbox in a huff. "stupid cube,"
"that's not very nice. rubiks cubes have feelings too." sehun blinked before looking up to find the source of the soft voice. standing to his left was a petite girl with long, black hair and large, chocolate eyes. her frame seemed delicate, as if a simple push or shove would tip her over, and her body was clothed in a dress that was not appropriate for a day at the playground. "... why are you staring at me like that?"
sehun was snapped out of his reverie by the girl's sudden question. "oh, um, sorry, i didn't mean to gawk. it's just. you said the rubiks cube has feelings? and you, um, you look like a doll." smooth line, sehun. smooth. he bit the inside of his cheeks as the girl tilted her head at a slight angle before making her way over to the discarded rubiks cube. picking it up and dusting off the sand, she beamed and placed a small kiss onto the toy before walking back to sehun and holding it out for him to retrieve.
"here, all better."
sehun blinked aimlessly for several seconds as he literally got lost in the girl's eyes. it wasn't until the girl cleared her throat that sehun snapped to attention. "oh, sorry again. um, but it isn't all better. not really."
"and why is that?"
he felt his face flush crimson as he curtly replied, "i-i can't solve it. so."
she let out a laugh - and to sehun, the sound was as melodious as birdsong - before holding out three fingers. "give me three minutes." she smiled with her eyes before sitting down next to sehun on the bench. she then proceeded to turn the cube this way and that, left and right, up and down... sehun's eyes kept themselves trained onto her nimble fingers until, finally, she solved the rubiks cube.
"oh, you-"
"i've been trying to get my time to under two minutes, maybe even under a minute." she grinned as she handed the now-organized cube to sehun.
"d-do you think you could teach me sometime?" sehun stammered. if he was to be honest, he was more interested in seeing the girl again then actually learning how to solve a rubiks cube. but he would never admit that. (not at this point in time, anyways)
just as the girl opened her mouth to respond, however, a cry rang out. "luhan!"
"luhan?" sehun mulled the name over in his mind. it was an unusual name for a girl, but perhaps that was because she wasn't from seoul...?
"oh, minseok. what's up?" the girl nodded her head as a male who looked older than her ran up to the two of them.
"luhan, you can't just wander off in the middle of rehearsal - especially in costume." oh, so that explained the fancy dress.
"ah, hyung, you worry too much." the girl pouted. wait - did she just call the new male "hyung"? sehun shook his head; no, he must have been hearing things.
"come on, let's go back to rehearsal." the boy called minseok pleaded as he tugged on the girl's (boy's?) arm. "they need to trim the wig right now; wufan thinks the hair should be shorter for snow white."
... wig? sehun's mouth dropped open as the girl (boy?) clicked her tongue and stripped off her long, black hair to reveal short, chestnut hair that was slightly curled. his mouth stayed agape as she (he?) began to walk away, trailing behind minseok.
however, just before she (he?) left, luhan turned around and waved a hand. "hey kid, you should stop by seoul boys' preparatory school sometime and see our production of snow white." he winked before turning away again. "see you there."
(and that was when sehun realized the importance behind never judging a book by its cover.)
