the top part is expanded by one tile because the red piece is wider. so the green and turqouise pieces don't cover the area. and then the brownish one doesn't either.
i get it i just can't explain it so well in writing.

If you'll kindly take a look at those two triangles...

Notice that the slopes of the triangles are not the same. In the first figure the figure in general looks a little concave. It's very slight to see pero yeah... find the slope of triangle A and B. LoL. And because they're rearranged like that in figure B, the figure is now convex and has to make up for the convexity (?) with that hole, made of all the small little pieces of square that the slopes account for. It all adds up.
