Here's PS7 a tutorial for going from
this to this:
Crop the
original image to 100px by 100px. I've used both Auto-Levels (Ctrl+Shift+L) and Auto-Colour (Ctrl+Shift+B) to clean the image. This tutorial works best with a darker picture in neutral-to-warm colours.
Create a New Layer, and fill/flood with #06083F set it to Exclusion (100%). Add an Unsharp Mask as needed.
On a New Layer, paste
this light texture by
cdg and set it to Lighten (35%).
On a New Layer, paste
this light texture by
cdg and set it to Colour Dodge (100%).
On a New Layer, paste
this mask by
unmasked_icons and then Invert it (DO NOT invert all layers, just this one!), so you get the image on the left.
Set the inverted mask layer to Screen (100%). Position it so that you have a section of white at the bottom of the image; this will be your text area.
Drag the Invert Mask layer so that it's the one following your Base Image. Your Exclusion, Lighten, and Colour Dodge layers should all overlay the mask now, which will automatically pick up the colours from the original image. Add text if you wish, I used LainieDaySH. Here's an image of the
layers used to create this icon.
