Is This Ethical?

Can someone tell me if this is ethical? My boss just hired a good friend of his to come work with us (Full time...with benefits). This person does everything I do. This is her first week-- and just so you know, I've been full-time freelance at this place until recently - they cut my hours in half (plus I never had benefits).

No worries about that ( Read more... )

given the job market, and the fact that you have one, I would grin and bear it.

Been there and in my experience you have 2 choices:
quit now or train her while you (ASAP and Covertly) look for another job

I've been in your shoes, although the new-hire was not my boss's friend, but I suspected the same thing. So, I took it as a sign that it was time to talk to my boss about my future with the company - sort of "what the f** is going on and what am I supposed to do". I was prepared for both outcomes - to be let go on the spot or to advance to a more senior level, while a newly hired person took over my "production" part of the job. It turned out to be the later. In your case chances also are that your boss gave this job to his/her friend temporarily, so she would learn some skills and then move on... So, maybe try talking to your boss, too?

This is what I was going to suggest. If you feel that you have nothing to lose either way, just talk to your boss and see where he/she is coming from.

There's a book or two out there on negotiating for salary and they're worth reading. I'm currently reading "Hardball for Women" which has some good things to say (and some not so awesome things too ( ... )

i'd say talk to your boss about it indirectly, rizhiy's thing about 'future with the company' is a great phrasing.
