Rate for contract work...I have no idea what to ask for?

My internship has turned into paid contact work. But they're not giving me a number and I have no idea what is appropriate to ask for. I'm a student graduating this December and I have 5 weeks of professional experience.

What is a good number? $15/hr? $17.50/hr?

Print design. I've done a logo and business card design, a couple of posters/flyers, a billboard, a magnet for a retirement planning company that also has the football schedule of the two major teams in my state, and this week I'm retouching an existing logo for someone.

Try looking up a salary survey by RGD (Canada) or AIGA (USA) and take a look at the numbers in there. There will be a breakdown based on experience, type of work, and type of company that should be helpful to you. It will also give figures for different areas/major cities, which can be helpful to find out the average for where you are (bigger cities typically have a higher salary average).

Are you doing this work at their office on their equipment? Or do you need to use your own equipment, internet connection, software, etc.? If you are using your own, look at freelance rates. If you go into the office, it's typically lower for more hours. You should also consider how many hours of work they are typically giving you.

Another thing you can try is looking for similar jobs for junior designers on a job site such as Monster and see what companies tend to offer.

Good luck.

A week after I graduated I got a contracted gig with a large fashion company and I got paid $18/hr.

I had no previous work experience only school!
