Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder (e.g. like O.C.D.). Until the 1950s it was thought to be a psychological disorder (and curable with drugs). A French doctor (Monsieur Tourette) diagnosed it as neurological (in the 1950s).
Tourettes manifests itself as internal and external vocalisations and physical actions. The most well known is that people swear in public places.
Channel 4 made a documentary called 'Tourette de France' where some journalist / presenter took a group of Tourette sufferers from England to France in old London bus. It parodied Cliff Richard's "I'm going on a summer holiday"
The 'leader' of the Tourette gang was a youth worker / social worker. Having Tourettes himself he did quite a few interviews. One in particular where he revealed that he couldn't keep a secret - because of Tourettes - he couldn't shop for birthdays or christmas in advance as he would tell you what he had bought.
