The strawberry blond head shook a bit, as its owner let out an annoyed sigh. His eyes scanned the article again, hoping what he read wasn’t as horrible as he originally thought. Doctor Cable Jones could not understand today’s youth. The immaturity, the insanity, the-the…
“Guy…where did you get that toy?”
A look of irritation came from Cable’s traveling companion.
“It’s not a toy; it’s a Transformers’ Action Figure…but doesn’t seem to be very good at the whole transforming thing.” A wrinkle appeared upon the man’s brow as he continued to harshly fiddle with the action figure.
Cable blinked a few times before he shook his head again and folded up the newspaper he had been reading. As he set his reading material into the seat pocket in front of him, he regarded his friend.
Cable was maybe an inch or two taller than Guy-making him taller than most on the plane-and instead of Guy’s neat, short-barely passing the tops of his ears-black hair, Cable’s hair was longer yet not really shoulder length and was always falling into his face. Guy’s attire consisted of black slacks, suit jacket and dress shoes, a white buttoned-down shirt and-the most important piece, almost as if it was another part of his body-the signature light pink tie. Cable looked down at himself for a second to remember what he had chosen to wear that day. It was a simple beige buttoned down shirt and some jeans that had seen better days. He had taken off his shoes because he hated wearing shoes while traveling long distances.
Cable mused over how different he and Guy were. How could someone who always looked so clean-cut and well adjusted be one of the most childlike, mischievous and complex people Cable had ever met? Cable stared at the seat in front of him, shifting in his seat trying to ignore the cramped space of the airplane. As he pretended to be staring at the random assortment of airline magazines in the seat pocket, Cable watched Guy out of the corner of his eye. Guy’s green eyes looked so focused and intense on solving the toy that Cable thought of letting out a chuckle, but thought better since he didn’t want to draw attention to himself. He didn’t have the energy to talk to Guy.
Cable placed his elbow on his left armrest and let his chin sink onto his hand as his eyes gazed out the small airplane window. He moved his right hand to grab the window shutter and close it a little so that the sunlight wasn’t glaring right into his eyes. The cloudy outside scene framed by cold, gray plastic of the plane’s interior left Cable feeling boxed in.
Cable zoned out. It was really unnecessary for him to come along. This was Guy’s job they were going to, not some vacation for just the two of them; he shouldn’t really be going. But the doctor couldn’t help but be a little mad at the thought of letting Guy go alone. Cable had gone to many out of state conferences for his job and hadn’t taken Guy, but that was different-Cable tried to convince himself. Guy had needed to stay home and baby-sit Maddie, Cable’s daughter. But now that Detective Wade and Emi were around, the baby-sitting wasn’t much of an issue. Cable had no reason to stay behind.
The doctor closed his eyes and let the air in his lungs out slowly. The thought of Guy going alone somewhere that was thousands of miles away worried Cable enough. But the thing that got Cable to insist on going with the dark haired man was the knowledge that Guy would have gone alone to see Jeffery. Just the thought of them together made Cable’s stomach squirm. Being jealous was not something he was used to but he was beginning to think that maybe he had gone too far. Being stuck on a plane with Guy Polks was going to drive him crazy.
The plane was an Airbus 340, a fairly large plane with three rows-the outer rows having two seats while the middle row have four-yet each seat was still uncomfortably small with a rare amount of legroom. The air smelt of airplane gas and recently cleaned seats combined with passengers’ perfume/cologne and sweat. Fortunately for Cable the noise was at a reasonable level and the only passenger that he could complain about was sitting to the right of him, but Guy hadn’t done anything uncivilized yet.
The sound of a cart’s wheels coming towards them down the aisle entered Cable’s mind. Within a few seconds an older looking female attendant pushing a cart filled with clear, plastic cups and an assortment of drinks came beside the two men. Cable opened one eye and looked over at Guy, who had started a staring contest with the toy-an angry staring contest.
“Can I get you something to drink sir?”
Cable opened his eyes and sat up in his seat. He was about to turn and answer the attendant when Guy’s voice cut in.
“Well certainly you ‘can’, it doesn’t seem too difficult to serve some drinks.” Guy hadn’t even looked up at the attendant, but just kept messing with the toy. “But whether you ‘may’ get us something to drink-then yes, yes you may.” After his chiding, Guy once again picked up the action figure and toyed with it some more.
The female attendant stood in shock, her mouth was slightly agape and she couldn’t help the scorn showing in her eyes as she looked at the dark haired man. Cable rolled his eyes and simply swatted Guy’s arm-in which Guy just let out a bored “ow” and didn’t stop his activity-then tried to give a reassuring smile to the woman but it only came out half-hearted.
Clearing his throat to get the attendant’s attention, Cable gave his request to the female. “I’ll just have a water. Thank you.”
A snicker reached Cable’s ears as the attendant turned to get the order and Cable pulled down his seat tray.
“OH! Water! What a healthy choice, Doc!” Guy’s eyes gleamed as he glanced quickly to the attendant. She curtly excused herself as she reached over Guy to hand Cable his drink. Cable set the drink down on his tray and only half listened to Guy’s drink request.
“Do you air people happen to serve chamomile tea?”
“No, sir.” The female stated with a great amount of patience.
“Really? Because I would really like some and it would-“
“Guy, she said they don’t have any. Ask for something else.” Again the blond tried to send a silent apology to the attendant.
Guy finally lifted his eyes off the toy to turn and give a pout to his friend.
“Kill-joy. Fine I shall have a 7-up-uh, right-please.” He added.
The attendant pursed her lips as she reached to get the drink and cup. She tried to hand it to the dark haired man but he seemed to ignore her so she handed it to the blond. After her duty of serving them was complete she pushed her cart away, a scowl set into her features.
Cable set the soda onto his own tray before he reached over to pull down Guy’s tray. When it was set up Guy rested his arms on it, his slender fingers still tinkering with one arm of the action figure. Cable was placing the soda between the other’s arms when a small snap sound was heard followed by a gasp from Guy.
“I-It broke…”
Cable rolled his eyes and looked towards Guy’s hands. One of the arms of the action figure was held in Guy’s right hand while the rest of the toy was in his opposite. Guy bit his lower lip in thought when an epiphany lit up his features. He turned and beamed at Cable. The doctor groaned at knowing that that smile said Guy wanted something and Cable would most likely help him, against his better judgment.
“Oh Doctor! I have a patient for you.” Grinning, Guy handed over the wounded toy to the taller man. Cable shoved the toy back into Guy’s hands and tried to glare at the childish man.
“I fix Human Beings. NOT toys.”
“But it needs your help! Oh and remember it’s not a toy-”
“I DON’T CARE WHAT IT IS! And I wouldn’t know how to fix it anyway.”
“…Please?”
“No.”
“…I love you?”
“NO!” As Cable was glaring at Guy-who throughout their argument had leaned in closer to the blond-he noticed the woman sitting across from them in the aisle seat of the middle row was trying hard not to look at them. The look of disapproval was clear in her black, beady little eyes that didn’t match the rest of her blimpish features.
Cable let out a defeated and annoyed sigh as he pushed Guy away from himself.
“I have to use the rest room.” He downed his cup of water set it on his armrest then replaced his tray to its place. He was getting up to move past Guy when the dark haired man flashed an impish grin.
“Want me to come with you?”
Both Cable and Guy looked over to the whale woman as she choked on her drink that she seemed to have sipped on during Guy’s reply. Guy smirked at the woman and dropped the broken toy onto Cable’s now empty seat.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk. Don’t people know it’s rude to eavesdrop?” Guy began to stand and pick up his drink so he could let Cable go by. The woman stared straight ahead, her face was so red she seemed like she might explode soon.
Cable tapped Guy lightly on the head once he was out in the aisle and the other was sitting again.
“Try to behave.”
“I’ll miss you.” A warm smile spread over both their faces. Cable shook his head in amusement and headed towards the restroom.
Though as he was passing the seat behind his own, he could hear a young boy ask his mother.
“Mommy, why did that man ask to go to the bathroom with the other man?”
Cable groaned as he could hear Guy’s laughter all the way to the restroom.
