As a person who has worked with people on the autism spectrum for years I must say-- you sound like an amazing parent, and you are fully equipped to navigate this path even if it feels frightening. Your son is every bit as extraordinary as you've always known.
My younger sister has downs syndrome it is a mild case, not sever I know that is a lot different than Autism, but she is twenty three now and she is able to function pretty well. She still has to be supervised, but she is a great joy yo be around and she remembers things in better detail than I do sometimes. Hopefully your son will turn out to be one of the lucky ones and don't let the doctors take away the joy you take in your son.
I KNOW you know this, because I'm sure you've been told, or have read everything you can get your hands on, but, this is NOT an ending of his innocence, and, it doesn't even necessarily have to be as bad as it might seem right now, at first glance. There are SO many levels of this "spectrum," some that might not even seem as obvious until you're forced to examine them from a diagnostic perspective

This is such a fascinating glimpse into parenting, and I've never heard the discovery of autism from this angle. The contrast of what you believed and what is now is intriguing and heartbreaking.
