so .. i worked that thursday night with my finger in a temporary splint, and although i was a bit gimped i could still get by. in the evening i got a call from the hospital ~ they had a spot available for the surgery, if i wanted it, on friday morning, may the 9th. i mentioned that i had to work at 3pm and so they said they’d give me the first

Well, that sounds like an unpleasant experience, even if it wasn't on the level of some of the people you mentioned from the news stories. It was still at least mildly traumatic for you, and, for that reason, I'm very glad you're en route to a full recovery! Take care of those fingers now, won't you? :)
