Progress on the Big Subway Book

I've been getting so many replies, I don't even know what to say. I'm absolutely overwhelmed by how much support you guys are giving me - please, keep sending in your stories! What I've been getting is so fascinating, I might even look to compile these stories on my own, after the Publishing Project is finished. Maybe archive them on my website, ( Read more... )

Well, I *do* read books, frequently and somewhat indiscriminately.

However, I would not read or buy this book. There's nothing about it that reaches out and grabs me, or that says "You will enjoy reading this".

obviously it's a matter of taste; i have no nterest in reading anything written by Robert Sawyer, for example, but that doesn't mean I don't read either. I think the important thing to establish is that we read books, despite what people of older generations may believe.

Well, it depends. First of all, being true stories from multiple writers experiencing something that everyone can relate to would actually sell to a number of people. But to reach specifically the internet generation of young adults, maybe you need to play with the format?

Like your Seth guy writing some episodes that seem art worthy, and then others as text, and play with the fonts and different page backgrounds to create texture, with black and white photos too, graphitti maybe. It should be more like a graphic magazine than an actual book. Being kind of multi-media would make it more accessible and reflect the diversity of transit experiences.

well, that mix of graphic and text elements is what we're eventually going to decide on. the biggest key would be in the editing - finding a way to arrange these stories in a way that would paint an interesting and compelling portrait of the human condition.

the whole point of the book isn't just to collect stories; it's to tell a story, which is a completely different thing.

As to editing, that would be trickier, because you have to take the different stories and create a flow. For some reason I can easily picture it in a movie: one story finishes with a door closing, and the next begins with a door opening. One train pulls away in one station, another arrives for the next story. But a book it's harder to think of, and that's the most important part because otherwise it's like an anthology of short stories, and I've never really liked those.

I would probably buy the book if it were illustrated well. As long as I hear about something like that, and get a peek beneath the cover, like what I see, I tend to buy books so I can read them at my leisure.

of course we will need something to read on the subway, which would mean a book.

It's been a month since the last page, have you stopped writing the comic?

emphatically no =)

I hadn't had much chance to work on the comic before because of the big final project. And now I'm in the middle of a major site redesign right now, moving the comic over to my new site and such. But I can tell you right now that Chapter 06 is on its way, and it's going to be posted as part of the big site relaunch.
