Wal-Mart: So Evil It's Sexy Pt.2

Apr 01, 2008 22:06

I take back what I said about Wal-Mart. Apparently even they aren't invincible to the force of nature known as The Public Relations Disaster. The news is that they've backed down on theír suit of Deborah Shanks and are actually allowing her family to keep their money ( Read more... )

I'm very happy to not shop there, one way or another.

But it's good news that they backed down. Deborah's story was heartbreaking in so many ways, and clearly her care will need all the money she can get.

Large corporations are why I just don't trust libertarians' ways of things. I don't trust big business to behave and respect human rights if not given laws and standards (which may or may not be enforced, like they are today, but at least they're there for when people try to enforce them).

Beyond the corporations and the government, I think a lot of the blame has to be put on the consumer too. Wal-Mart wouldn't be where it is if people didn't buy into it's policy of 'low low prices no matter what'. And sad to say, I don't think it's simply a case of people not asking what a company had to do or who they had to screw to achieve such savings; I think quite a few people know and just plain don't care.

I know McDonald's buys mostly Brazilian beef, which is raised mostly on plains formed from slash'n'burned Amazon rainforest. But the Amazon is the last thing on my mind when I indulge in a Royale With Cheese. Fuck, I don't know what it is with us.

Ha, don't get me started on Hot Topic. If punkyfish were arouind when I was a kid, I would've made a conscious effort to be the lamest looking boy in school. Thank God for Catholic school uniforms.

Same here. I just don't trust a place that sells VCRs and pets in the same building.

Man, thanks for bringing up McD's. I am so craving a Royale With Cheese right now.
