Having over the years properly distanced myself from whatever nostalgia might cloud my opinion today, and having watched the second Star Wars trilogy again over the course of this weekend, I can confidently and unhesitatingly make the following statement:

GEORGE LUCAS WRITES TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE DIALOGUE.

See, Mr. Lucas strikes me as the classic Idea Man in that he's very good at coming up with a lot of ideas in a relatively short amount of time, but he doesn't really have a way of filtering out the bad ones nor is he all that great at translating the great ones on page (or film or whatever).

That explains why he is constantly redoing everything, because something alwas gets lost in translation with him. It's also why I think his stuff is so much better when created in collaboration with someone else (see: Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark).

And that's an amusing anecdote you bring up. Of course you can't really take the word of the Joker('s voice actor) at face value. But it's still amusing. Also this confirms my theory that Harrison Ford, awesome as he is, might also be a tremendous jerk.
