Powers

What kinds of magical/special/crazy powers does your character have, if any?: Lia is proficient in the magic of the Blood, the mystically gifted people of her setting. Like most Blood, especially Jeweled Blood, she has the ability to manipulate physical objects. She can move or levitate objects in a manner very much akin to telekinesis, heat and sustain warmth in water or food, and access a sort of psychic holding space in which things can be stored, allowing them to be banished and called to hand instantaneously. She knows how to probe food or drink for foreign substances, though if they aren't types she recognizes, they might pass undetected.

Being Jeweled Blood, and moreover quite strong (during the time period in which she lives, there are only two tiers of Jewel known to be stronger than the Gray), she has access to a deep reservoir of psychic power in addition to the minor abilities noted above. She can use this to communicate telepathically with other Blood, on what are known as psychic threads. She can also sense and manipulate the emotions of those around her, project her own emotions outward, detect psychic residue on an object or in an area, and read the minds of those whose psychic barriers are weak enough for her to bypass or have been willingly opened to her. In the case of reading minds, the closer to the surface the information is, the easier it is to access. Her own barriers work to filter much of the ambient information out, as well as to keep her own mind safe. While she can technically read the minds of those who have no psychic strength whatsoever, such an attempt is usually at best damaging to the person it's done to; the effect is similar to shattering the psychic barriers the Blood use as defense.

Along with communication, Lia's psychic abilities can also be used in combat. The Jeweled Blood have the ability to destroy both matter and mind with their power, and to shield against similar assaults against themselves or others. Shields come in three types: psychic shields that protect the mind, shields that serve as a barrier against physical force (often also used to keep others from accessing areas or objects), and aural and sight shields, used to mask a person's physical presence.

As with all female members of the Blood, Lia becomes vulnerable during her menstrual cycle. For the first three days she is unable to use anything but basic Craft without suffering immense pain, and much of her reservoir of strength has to be drained from her body into her Jewels. A witch on her moontime is, rather unfortunately, recognizable to male Blood past puberty. As she last had her cycle not long before the end of the book, this isn't likely to come up too terribly soon in game.

While it is not, in Lia's case, an inborn talent, she has learned some healing Craft. She is able to heal lash wounds without leaving a scar, for example, and to bolster the healing of deep tissue wounds. She doesn't have the training of a true Healer, however, and so is limited in what she can accomplish. As a Queen, she also has the ability to heal the land. She can coax plants to grow, and with enough time to spend might even be able to coax a place that had been made barren to again support life.

She has been trained to recognize illusions and other psychic manipulation, though as noted in the history this ability is far from perfect. It is strongly implied that she can pick out an illusion spun by someone her own strength or weaker, but the ability breaks down against those stronger than herself.

If present, how do you plan to tweak those powers to make him/her appropriately hindered in the setting of Landel's?: Lia will have no access to her Jewels, and thus will only have the strength she can store in her own body to draw on. In addition to making any use of her magic tiring, this will also cause her trouble when eventually her cycle does come up in game, as not being able to access her Jewels will also keep her from being able to drain off her power into that reservoir.

She will still be able to sense emotions, if distantly, especially those that are strongly projected, and pick up strong psychic residue in an area that has recently experienced an extreme emotional surge (like abject terror). Proximity heightens the strength of these impressions, touch more so. As calming others' emotions is rather standard fare in her world, with prolonged contact she might be able to do so to a mild degree, though it would leave her exhausted. While she might be able to pick up stray surface thoughts if they're strong enough and she's looking, she won't be able to pry any deeper. Given the likely general emotional resonance in the setting, she'll likely spend far more time clinging to her barriers like a life raft than actually trying to expand her awareness.

Since Lia does show some healing ability in canon, I'd like for her to keep some degree of that. She might be able to heal a few surface injuries or one single serious one at the cost of utter exhaustion. She won't be able to exert any influence on the land, and given the connection with it that should come with being a Queen, that loss will disturb her greatly.
