Help with kettle dyeing

I get the basic concept of kettle dyeing but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get the dye to seep to the bottom of the roving.  When I dye in a crockpot, I have to help the dye move around and when I dye on a cookie sheet, I have to turn over the single layer of roving to squirt dye on the other side that's still white.  Kettle dyeing
