Adventures in tutoring

A few years ago I finally reach the point where I wanted to get off my butt and actually give something back to the community (no, I don't think posting to my blog counts).  I was always interested in some sort of literacy volunteering so I looked into the Hunterdon County chapter of Literacy Volunteers of America - but each time I looked I had just missed some cutoff date for enrolling in their training class.

So this past summer I remembered once again, and checked with the Mercer County chapter (since, you know, I live in Mercer County now), and voila!  I made it just under the wire.  So last week was the end of my 7-week training course to teach English to someone who was either an adult native who never learned, or to someone from another country.

Incidentally, I learned that ESL is out and is now replaced by ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages.  But I digest...

After a minor administrative snafu, I found out my potential new student today - a gentleman from Peru who hopes to improve his speaking skills, become a U.S. citizen, and vote (no, clever_title , I will not give him any Ron Paul literature).  I'll call him today or tomorrow and hopefully we'll have our first meeting set up.
