10 Things Learned From WitS (wherein I don't mince words on some things):

So, while this is meant to be my observations, both positive and negative, I openly note that I feel strongly about some of this and I may get a little inflammatory here (because some things really annoyed me). I'm not trying to egg anyone on or troll anyone. If anything, I'm hoping discussion on these points will help me figure out how to do some ( Read more... )

I'll second that last. Momeni lost a lot of steam without the beta to give her thrust, and while I like her story, it left a lot of people going "WTF?" or "er...Voidwyrm! Fight!" It's a pity, too, because it was also meant to give Gina some exploration, but she's just not meant for the epic battle scene, y'know? So in hindsight, we could have handled it a lot differently if we'd had time.

Trust me, you're not the only one who needs to learn to stop trying to do so much in these all at once. ^_^;

Regarding Gina, though- I don't think she's disliked in the community, but I do think she didn't impress herself upon people. Nicolai, Diego, Tersis, and Sath have some pretty distinct ways to make themselves memorable; Gina has a lot of room to grow (maybe the most of any of these characters), and I really look forward to what you do with her and the rest of the Muses- don't read anything dirty in that

You might be right, but there's more than a few people in RI who have told me when asked that Gina just is not an archetype they like. At the very least, work is extremely cut out for me on that front, hence my worry. I can still develop her in my Muse Fic taht takes place before WitS, but I realy do worry that for her and a few other of them it's just entirely a wasted effort.

As far as the system stuff goes, we at least had three people who were playing the game, and well, in the finals this time (Moogle, April, and Mith). Unfortunately, I suspect it's either because the most common healfenders either dropped, were forced to drop, actually decided to play this time (which was only two I can think of), or sidekicked. Which is pretty sad, people making it so far for playing the offense card should not be the exception.

I think this is the first tournament ever where I dueled just for the hell of it. I guess I've never gotten into the "whose character is stronger" arguments so I don't care about duels, because it doesn't matter to me who would win. Hence why the ones I wrote in this tournament just ended in the two characters agreeing to spar and then laying off after a good workout. That was fun, but I'll never understand why people are "OMG! Must duel!" Your comment about the lack of dueling when people were complaining about wanting to duel is kind of sad in an amusing way, though ( ... )

While I do think there's always room to be creative with your motivations (a duel, after all, can be anything from a grim kengo death-duel to a curious spar on friendly terms to...poisonous sex in a tower), WitS could have benefited from a more focused sponsor pool. That was a LOT of good guys. I wanted to keep things open and flexible with some thematic emphasis, but arranging the pool to cover a wider spectrum should be a definite goal of future tournaments.

Define "wider spectrum". I don't think I quite get what you mean here, since "All fiction" is a pretty wide spectrum to begin with.

- my bad. Wider alignment spectrum.

Hi~ Might as well go point-by-point through some of these, since I do share some of your concerns (and, on the other hand, am guilty of perpetrating a few of them myself). Don't be surprised if I start editorializing myself on some of these points, I have a big damn mouth and don't know when to shut it. >_ ( ... )

6) I'm going to refrain from commenting since I wasn't even playing after like round 2.

7) Well, to be fair, this is a writing tournament, not a reading tournament. I make it a point to read the intros and character descriptions, usually because there's time before the tournament proper TO read them, but when we're in attack mode it's all I can do just to write. When I'm staring at a blank posting box in the middle of a massive assault on a big city, and the only words in my head to put into that blank space are "a turtle," I'm not as worried about what I have/haven't read than what I have to write. Moreover, when you start getting into the sleep deprivation and the real-life concerns and stuff, sometimes even things you've read already fade from your memory. I know my brain isn't at its best in the middle of tourney time--I've seen it happen ( ... )
