Actually I should add, I would advise you to try and find some introductory course or at least someone who could guide you on how to start meditation. It's not really hard but it's easy to get wrong if you see what I mean, especially when it comes to body posture. I would imagine Dublin should have some places that offer introductions to meditation, whether Buddhist based or not...
I've used a zazen type counting technique for years, and since I am only mildly (ehrm) insane it can't be all wrong.
Sit comfortably (I like meditation stools of the style shown in http://www.markloewenstein.com/wood/medstool.html, except I don't have the stabilizing third piece, or a zafu pillow, but a small hard pillow will work) and start counting breaths (slow, deep and natural paced). Once you get to a set number (I use 9), you start over. When you realize you are counting 12...13...14 or thinking about your cat you just start over at one, without recrimations or interruption.
One can also do visualization (either of a real object or scene from memory or something created fully in your mind) or more "mindfullness" (google) type exercises. I also like pure total observation stuff like shikantaza (mostly when sitting outdoors).
